Sanjaya at Seventeen

...Remember those who win the game
Lose the love they sought to gain
In debentures of quality
And dubious integrity
Their small town eyes will gape at you in
Dull surprise when payment due
Exceeds accounts received at seventeen...
- "At Seventeen" by Janis Ian, 1975

  1. OK, so I haven't seen this phenom. Does he have any talent?

Everyone says he is talentless. Is that true or is he just too different for the Idol/Pop style?

  2. Oh, he's "different" all right. Actually, I've only seen a few minute of "Idol" for the past three years. Around Season 3, they cemented the format: bad singers; canned music; bad songs; live audience/live band; "Yo yo yo, wassup?" "You are such an amazing talent..." "Well, that was just boring, wasn't it?"; etc. and if you watched Season 3, then you've watched every season of "Idol" in some kind of television purgatory that only we as a nation can perpetuate upon ourselves. Perhaps that is America's one true talent: the making of hit TV shows on a regular basis. Dubious, but I guess it provides a needed service...? Oh, Sanjaya--yes, he probably can sing OK but he's very whispy and soft-spoken and out of his element, so he often sucks. Great hair though. Really great. And as Paula says, "You are such a sweet and amazing person..."
